Transportation is available for our students for regular school hours (following the Hartford Public Schools Transportation Guidelines) as long as the student lives more than 2 miles from the school. Initial transportation request forms are completed at the time of enrollment. Any changes, updates or add-ons thereafter are requested through the school office.
Bus tokens to take the city bus home are available for students who stay after school for tutorial programs, extra curricular activities and also students who stay for extra help in their subject areas as long as the student is staying with a teacher or staff member.
Special education students and special circumstances will be considered case-by-case based on Hartford Public School guidelines.
TRANSPORTING SUBURBAN STUDENTS
DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER
The Hartford Public Schools transportation procedures in inclement weather is uniquely different than most school districts because we serve 11 schools and students in 32 towns spanning a radius of over forty miles. Weather may require a school cancellation, late opening or early dismissal in one district while it may not be required in another district. A magnet student may be attending a school that will not be dismissed early but he/she lives in a town where schools are dismissed early.
Hartford Public Schools will attempt to honor all sending school district decisions. However, situations may arise that will require Hartford Public Schools to override the decision and cause Hartford Public School students to arrive late, be dismissed early, or not attend school even though the sending school has not issued such a change. The parent/guardian must determine school closing, late opening and early dismissal information through the media - television or radio. The parent/guardian must know what the delay is for the town they live in as well as the town in which their child attends school.
IMPORTANT: A STUDENT MAY RIDE A BUS THAT SERVES MULTIPLE TOWNS. YOUR CHILD’S BUS WILL FOLLOW THE SCHEDULE OF THE DISTRICT THAT HAS THE LONGEST DELAY.
1. If Hartford delays school for ninety [90] minutes and the school district your child lives in has no delay, your child will be delayed by ninety [90] minutes.
2. If Hartford has no delay but the school district your child lives in has a ninety [90] minute delay, your child will be delayed ninety [90] minutes.
3. If Hartford has cancelled school and the school district your child lives in has NO school, your child will NOT go to school.
4. If Hartford has a ninety [90] minute delay but the school district your child lives in has CANCELLED school, your child will NOT go to school.
5. If Hartford has a two-hour [2] early dismissal, your child will be dismissed two hours [2] early even if your district has no early dismissal.
6. If Hartford has a one-hour [1] early dismissal and the school district your child lives in has a two-hour [2] dismissal, your child will be dismissed two [2] hours early.
7. If Hartford has no early dismissal and your district does, your
child will be dismissed according to your district.
Parents/guardians are asked not to call Hartford Public Schools or the transportation provider to determine late start times, early dismissal times or closings. The student’s pick-up and drop-off times are adjusted by the late start or early dismissal time. If the student is routinely picked-up at 7:10, they will now be picked-up at 8:40 if there is a ninety-minute [90] delay. This information is readily available from the radio or television. We suggest that you log onto WFSB.COM on the internet where you will be able to get the entire cancellation list in alphabetical order.
The parent/guardian may transport their child to school if it has been determined that the bus will not run in your district and Hartford Public Schools are in session. The parent/guardian must provide transportation for the return trip as well for that day.
Transporting students in bad weather is always a challenge. Buses run slower to be safe and roads can be blocked due to accidents. Patience, understanding and cooperation are needed as your child’s safety is our top priority.
